Riot Girls: Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes, Look BookJessica WeikertComment

The Concept

I have the hardest time vocalizing my vision, so here's what I emailed Justine, the videographer, when she asked for the background story:

"Here's what I've come up with for a mini background story- They're 3 girls in a indie/rock/alt/pop type band, so they'll kind of have they're own personalities in their style (aka not uniform wardrobe/hair/makeup/etc.) This is a shoot for their album cover & accompanying promo pics, and they're just hanging out & having fun. So I guess the video would have the vibe of a promo/teaser. It would be directly about the clothes & their wearability & that vintage is cool (my shop focuses on wearable vintage), but the story would (to the viewer) not have such a direct "fashion commercial" vibe. Does this even make sense?"

That's also where the title of the video & look book came from. "Riot Girls" is the name of their (make-believe) band.

Preparation

Location Scouting

We knew we only had 2 hours to shoot the look book & video, so we'd have to find a variety of set options close together. My friend, Carter, and I spent hours walking around back alleys all over the city. I wanted to showcase what York City has to offer, so we went on a hunt to find some cool outdoor spaces. We finally settled on Royal Square as the final location because almost every building on that block is a different color!

Song Choice

After spending hours/days/weeks on Youtube & Pandora trying to find the perfect upbeat girl rock/indie/electro/pop song to accompany the video, I finally found "Birth in Reverse" by St. Vincent. It really matched the vibe I wanted for the video & I was so excited when I heard it. Along the way I found some other great indie rocker girls that are totally worth mentioning: Halsey, Melanie Martinez, Mariana & the Diamonds & Zara Larsson. All of which are currently on my playlist.

Mood Boarding

The first thing I did for this shoot is started searching Pinterest for mood board images. That, and watch a ton of music videos on YouTube. I created a Pinterest board for all the images & videos I planned to use for inspiration, so the when I contacted the photographer & videographer about my vision, I had something more concrete to show them. Pinterest really helped with narrowing my concept. I looked up a ton of band pics, vintage & modern (see: Nirvana & Haim), & chose my favorites for the shoot inspiration. I also used pinterest to find make up & hair looks. The benefit of knowing all the girls was that I knew what looked good on them & I knew their make up and hair skills. (They each did their own looks!) For Gabi's look, I chose a softer pink palette because I knew she could rock it. Plus it's would look super cool in contrast to her buzzed hair. For Seren's look, I chose to go a little more classic rock, deep hues for her eyes & a dark berry lip. For Ariel's look, I went totally bold. The day I told her she was going to be covered in glitter for the shoot she was already wearing glitter eye shadow! Once I felt like I had enough images to get the visual concept across to everyone, I added a little rock-n-roll hand for good measure & sent it out to the group!

About the Crew

For the models, I wanted to choose a group of girls that already knew each other so that the "band" chemistry would be real. Luckily I have some beautiful friends! I know Ariel, Gabi & Seren from working/living downtown & you may have spotted them in a few other photo shoots downtown.

Justine Hulsey was the videographer who shot & edited the amazing video! I've never worked with video, but she was so easy to work with & really helped with all the preparation work (which is my weakness).

Allison Witherow was the wonderful photographer who pulled the whole look book together. She was one of the first people I approached to work on this project & I'm so happy I reached out to her! Isn't every photo beautiful?

The Photoshoot

The photoshoot itself was breeze, literally. It was so windy! Luckily that works well for product shots because it adds volume to skirts & dimensions to hair. We got everything done in under 2 hours including outfit changes, last minute styling, switching from photo to video, & moving locations several times. I'd say that's a win! We had so much footage & photos to work with, it was hard to narrow it down to the final cuts for the video & images for the look book.

Final Thoughts

Would I do anything differently? Try not to forget the speaker next time! Since I had previously chosen the song that would accompany the video, we wanted to be playing the song during the shoot to set the right tone. But since I forgot the bluetooth speaker, Justine had to play the song over & over again from her phone the whole time. Sorry about your data, Justine! I hope you have unlimited.

enjoy + share!

XO Jess

Vintage to Modern: The 90s Slip Dress

Trend Inspiration: the 90s Slip Dress

STYLE ALERT

Take a tip from Kate Moss circa 1994 & get on the slip dress bandwagon ASAP. In the 90s, many fashion bombshells opted for the long, silky piece with minimal accessorizing and nude makeup. This style dominated the runways and red carpet events throughout the entire decade. When the stars weren't dressing their negliges off in the lime-light, they threw their night gowns over a simple tee for a casual, layered look. Though 90s fashion is remembered for its grunge aesthetic, this simple, feminine look prevailed through all the leather & plaid.

FAST FOWARD

It's 2016 & all the big names in Hollywood are flaunting their silky strut in the California sun once again. 20 years later, Selena Gomez, Rihanna & Karlie Kloss are all huge fans of this trend. From pairing it with a leather jacket & sneakers, to dressing it up it out with pumps & pearls, this trend is definitely making its comeback.

GET THE TREND

Taking a page from the 90s fashion playbook, styling for these looks today is practically identical. Simplicity is a great approach, making tousled treads & and oversized tote the perfect combo your look. Channeling models like Gigi & Kendall, pull an Alicia Silverstone & put your dress over a plain t-shirt to perfect an effortlessly chic vibe. And although everyone loves a LBD or LWD, try playing with patterns and textures. That shine of the silky fabric is even more impactful when it is contrasted with a subtle velvet. Of course the soul mate of silk is lace, so opting for a dress with both will turn heads even faster.

Meet our Summer Intern, Allie!

Guest UserComment

Hi there! Intern Allie here. I'm the girl with the dirty blonde hair that uses the sparkle emoji way too much on our Snapchat posts. I am loving life here at Revolt Style Studio. Although York City is a lot different than what I'm used to in northern Virginia, I'm so glad to be back in Pennsylvania where I grew up.

As a rising senior at Marymount University in Arlington, VA, I'm really being hit hard with all those expectations of adulthood. You know, figuring out if paying an extra $2 for organic food is really worth it, deciding how often laundry actually needs to be done... all that fun stuff. But I've been keeping my eyes on the prize of graduating this spring with my Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Merchandising.

Being a member of the fashion club, the yearly fashion show, and the school newspaper keeps me busy whenever I'm not pulling all-nighter on an essay for one of my last prereq's. I would love to say that I'm a lead all-star on a sports team, but my hand eye coordination and overall ability for athletics parallels Kevin James at the Open. So sticking to fashion is going just fine for me.

I have a half-hour commute from school to home, where I live with my fiancé, our two dogs, and our roommates. Ryan, my fiancé, and I met in high school in Pennsylvania and headed down to Virginia to pursue our degrees. We're tying the knot in May, and I honestly have a constant mental list of 109 'to-do's before "we do." But Netflix, early morning workouts, and lounging with our pups keep us sane. I talk to our dogs, more than I do most humans, which seems borderline antisocial, but I promise, they told me I was totally normal. Our roommates, Madison and Brian, rock, and we're basically like Friends but we have pets, and as hard as I may try, I'll probably never become Rachel Green.

On any given day I could be giving a class presentation on fashion icons, working retail at Hallmark, nannying at an upscale apartment complex, making dinner for my friend-fam, or helping Jessica make Revolt Style Studio even cooler than it was 5 seconds ago. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, bring me a plate of hot wings and a cute outfit and I'm doing, bring me plate of hot wings and a cute outfit and I'm all yours.

Vintage to Modern: The Floral 50s Tea Dress

Trend Inspiration: The Floral 50s Tea Dress

STYLE ALERT

Floral fifties swing dresses brought to you by the one & only Audrey Hepburn

For those who don't know, Audrey brought a lot more to the fashion world than the iconic Breakfast at Tiffany's LBD. Evolving from the New Look by Christian Dior in 1947, this silhouette made its debut in the early '50s. Audrey was the queen of the narrow waisted garnet with a full skirt. Throw in a waist cinching belt and a floral pattern & it was a match made in vintage heaven.

FAST FOWARD

Classic vibes radiate from this trend, so it's not surprising that these dresses have gone from a go-to for writing poetry in the garden then, to captioning your latest #OOTD Instagram post now. This silhouette is perfect because it works for even body type. Drawing emphasis to the waist & a voluminous skirt helps to show off curves, displaying the ultimate amount of femininity. Today, stars like Taylor Swift & Blake Lively are obsessed with this slimming silhouette.

GET THE TREND

The key for channeling vintage is all in the styling. Don't stress yourself out trying to replicate the entire outfit, but rather pull from the concepts to give the look a modern twist. The best way to do that is to pair this tea length dress with bold accessories. Pair with a bold lip & a sleek topknot to slay like a 50s starlet, or pair with a choker & sneakers for an edgier, modern vibe.
